‘à la recherche du ballon rouge’ is a reflection upon the work of filmdirector Hou Hsiao-Hsien. His exquisite use of colours, his Ozu-like static camera-use. My ‘ballon rouge’ does not follow a story, it’s not an actual comment on a film, but more what happened in my head after watching his (later) movies. It has references to Jean Cocteau’s ‘Orphée’ and even points back at a composer like Maurice Ravel, because the use of colours in ‘le voyage du ballon rouge’ (Hsien’s movie from 2007) reminded me of Ravel’s works.
The piece was made for Helen Homan-Wu’s project ‘re-scores’ and is dedicated to her. It will be premiered at the Frontrunner Gallery, june 2012.
